Do you love taking photographs? Does flying up high in the sky to do so sound fun to you? If so, a job as an aerial photographer may be for you. In addition, at a yearly salary of $35,000-70,000, it is not a bad choice!
If it was not obvious, aerial photography is taking pictures of the land or scenery below from a plane above. As a photographer, you must make sure all shots are accurate and you keep your clients happy.
A lot more goes into this job than snapping pictures, though. As with most jobs, you must go to college, and get a degree in an aeronautical field, as well as photography. You must also receive an aeronautical license. In some cases, you may need an Airline Transport Pilot License, Multiengine Land and Sea License and Commercial Helicopter License. There is a certain amount of creativity and persistence involved, as well as management of time, visual interpretation and perception, and physical ability. It is not all fun and games, but it can be sometimes! Besides dealing with clients’ portfolios and worrying about making deadlines, you can be extremely creative with your works.
Besides just taking pictures to capture postcard views, most photos are used in surveying land below. In fact, French balloonist Gaspard-Félix Tournachon took the first documented aerial photographs in 1858. He took pictures of the country and its beauty, also creating a map of France. It sounded like a good idea, but the balloons attracted enemy fire, and in 1863, they were disbanded. During World War I, airplanes replaced Tournachon’s air balloons, and photos were taken on a daily basis and were further studied.
If a job in aerial photography sounds interesting to you, there are many books available about this interesting career. The Manual of Aerial Photography by Ron Graham and Rodger Read is an excellent book to get more information about aerial photography. The Medina County Library has many books available about this career. If you search the Internet, you will be sure to find out a ton of information about aerial photography. Good luck and happy flying!
