In the third of a series of six articles, The Snapshot will be exploring Downtown Cleveland, and all that it has to offer.
There’s no doubt that Cleveland is up on it’s artsy side—a world-renowned art museum, public art everywhere throughout Greater Cleveland and many architecturally interesting buildings throughout Downtown Cleveland (need we go on?). The Greater Cleveland area has amazing art galleries, but you don’t have to travel all the way out to the East Side to see them all. Hidden in Downtown Cleveland are some equally amazing galleries.
If you’re on an art trek into Downtown Cleveland, make sure to stop at the ARTcade (530 Euclid Avenue) in the Gateway District. Here, at the hub of the Downtown art scene, you can see tens of galleries, and on the third Friday of every month, you can participate in artwalks. Some of the major tenants include ArtMetro, Gallery Ü, Suite 36, Bancroft Gallery and Brown Ink Design.
Any art buff should also stroll down historic Euclid Avenue from Public Square and Cleveland State University. The Euclid Avenue Corridor (which is currently going under an extreme makeover, so ignore the dust) hosts galleries like Bonfoey (1710 Euclid Avenue), one of the most historic art galleries in all of Cleveland; Contessa Gallery & Elevation Art in Playhouse Square (see next paragraph); the ARTcade (see prior paragraph); Bancroft Gallery, Arthur Feldman Graphics & Portraits Plus (all 401 Euclid Avenue); Ninth Street Gallery (ironically, 700 Euclid Avenue); Illusions Art (2063 E 4th St); and many more galleries!
Contessa Gallery (1501 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland & Cedar Road, Lyndhurst) brings the finest of all art forms to Downtown Cleveland’s Playhouse Square (and the East Side). Elevation Art, also in Playhouse Square specializes in site-specific art, and features artists from around the globe.
In and near The Flats Entertainment District, you can explore many art scenes including SHAHEEN modern and contemporary art (740 W Superior); Griffon Gallery (1370 W 9th St) specializing in many accent pieces and ceramics; Brenda Kroos Gallery (1360 W 9th St); Brett Mitchell Collection (740 W Superior); Wolf’s (1239 W 6th St); Berg and Associates (1220 W 6th St); and many more galleries!
Downtown Cleveland’s two malls also host some art galleries. The Avenue at Tower City hosts Skyline Sports (230 W Huron Avenue), which specializes in sports and cityscape photography. And the Galleria at Erieview is home to Thrive – an Artspace (1301 E 9th St, 2nd Floor), which features regional artists, and doubles as a poetry reading and tango dancing locale, as well as a yoga studio!
Cleveland State University is also home to two galleries: CSU Art Gallery (2307 Chester Avenue) and EDGE (1844 Euclid Avenue). The first hosts international artists and CSU students, and the latter hosts regional emerging, both featuring all mediums.
Downtown Cleveland is easily accessible from anywhere in northeastern Ohio. The most popular (and busiest) interstate exits are 171B (Ontario Street Northbound) towards Public Square, Tower City and the Galleria at Erieview; 172A (E 9th St/Rock and Roll Boulevard Northbound) towards the Rock Hall, Science Center and the heart of the Euclid Corridor; 173A (Chester Avenue) towards Cleveland State University and the Euclid Corridor; and 174B to the Memorial Shoreway which will take you directly to The Flats District. Downtown Cleveland is also the RTA’s main hub, located inside Tower City Center. And you can even ride a trolley through downtown on the Urban Gallery Hop, which stops at 16 galleries in Downtown, and more than 50 galleries citywide.
Downtown Cleveland has it all—food, fun and amazing entertainment. Maybe that’s why Downtown Cleveland was named one of the best places to walk around in the country! So embrace our beautiful downtown by strolling down historic Euclid Avenue and find the perfect lighting for amazing photos in Public Square or The Mall (which, no, is not a shopping mall, it’s an open green space). Spend a day (or two) in the amazing city we call home—you’re guaranteed to find some surprises!
