In this new six-month series, the Snapshot will highlight and display what Cleveland’s six major art districts (Tremont, University Circle/Cleveland Heights, Downtown, Little Italy, Ohio City, and Shaker Heights/Larchmere) have to offer. In this first “Spotlight” we will take a closer look at Tremont.
Just because Tremont is the smallest of these six districts, it certainly does not mean that there is nothing to see! Confined by I-90, I-77, I-490 and the Cuyahoga River, this .43 square mile area boasts mostly contemporary galleries at modest prices. Nearly every establishment, from the bars to the ice cream parlors, incorporates art into its exterior façade and interior design. You’ll find a four-foot coffee mug at Lucky’s Café and a shamrock cutout on the ventilation grate at the Tree House Bar. Even the street names are artistic, most named after art professors from Cleveland University, which used to be located in Tremont.
But most of the action is along Professor Avenue. Professor Street houses the edgy * (Asterisk Gallery) with new exhibits every month from Cleveland area artists; Pavanna Gallery which features hand-blown glass & jewelry; and Azure Stained Glass Studio which obviously specializes in stained glass. Also in the area is Atmosphere on W 11th St, which hosts local artists; Brandt Gallery/Southside Gallery on Kenilworth Avenue with mostly contemporary pieces; Doubting Thomas on Jefferson Avenue with works “outside the Outside movement”; and Kelly-Randall Gallery on W 14th St, also featuring local artists.
A fun tradition in the Tremont District is the Tremont ArtWalk, held on the second Friday of every month. Many of the galleries will display their new works at this time. For more information about the ArtWalk, visit tremontartwalk.org.
Main access into Tremont from the southern suburbs is by the W 14th exit off of I-71, and then going north on W 14th for approx. one mile. Alternatively, you can get off at I-90 Exit 171B, go left on Carnegie and left on W 3rd St to Literary Road or Jefferson Avenue. The RTA also has two lines into Tremont: No. 81 and No. 84, or you can take Community Circulator 807.
Tremont is an amazing district that everyone should visit. Relax in Lincoln Park or stroll down Professor Street. Grab a bite to eat at Take a Bite or get a latté at Lucky’s Café. In Tremont, there is something for everyone to do.
