Ohio City: home to the West Side Market, Market Square and the Great Lakes Brewing Company. All offer great photographic opportunities, but Ohio City’s real treasure is its art scene.
SPACES Gallery (2220 Superior Viaduct, Ohio City, spacesgallery.org) is one of Cleveland’s, and one of Ohio’s, best galleries. Since 1978, SPACES has been known for consistently delivering the best of new contemporary art. The material is always innovative and unique, and is always distinctive to Cleveland and the world. SPACES has six major exhibits per year, all with ostentatious opening celebrations.
Two of Ohio City’s best galleries are along W 25th Street, the main thoroughfare through Ohio City. The first is Buzz Gallery (1836 W 25th St, Ohio City, buzzgallery.com), which recently reopened after taking a break for a year. The gallery is run by six local artists, previously known as the Nimbus group. The gallery features works from these six artists, as well as traveling monthly exhibits.
The second of the galleries is the Something Different Art Gallery (1899 W 25th St, Ohio City, differentgallery.com), run by Koula Lazar, a Cleveland native artist. Her gallery, which has been around for 22 years, is an inviting, energy-filled environment, where you are met at the door with a glass of wine and are left to browse privately. Her eclectic 1000 square foot gallery recently hosted oil paintings from Ron Hennings, a Cleveland native.
Just a short stroll from W 25th Street to W 45th Street, one can find the Ohio City Gallery & Circle Studios (1940 W 45th St, Ohio City). Alice Butts lead the gallery, which was previously a German grocery store. She now hosts 15 local artists, young and old, with work in everything from ceramics to blown glass. David Rankin, a CIA professor, has even had a watercolor exhibit at the gallery. The gallery hosts six to eight shows per year.
By far, one of the most amazing galleries in Ohio City is the Glass Bubble Project (2421 Bridge Ave, Ohio City, michael44113.tripod.com). The gallery has amazing pieces of hand-blown glass and a stained glass exhibit. The gallery also offers an art studio and glassblowing classes. Every Saturday at noon at 4 p.m., the gallery offers free demonstrations of glassblowing.
Food is never short when in Ohio City. The area features many delicatessens, like Nate’s Deli, the Ohio City Delicatessen and Heck’s Café. Johnny Mango, which recently went under a large renovation, is located off Fulton Rd. Visitors can also find Italian, pizza, Chinese and Greek restaurants in the area.
Ohio City is easy to get to via I-71. Take Exit 245 and turn left on Fulton. Go north for two miles, and you will enter the Ohio City area. Downtown Cleveland is mere minutes away, via Lorain Ave.
Ohio City is sure to amaze any art enthusiast with its galleries and public art. The area makes a great weekend getaway, or just as a stop on the way home from downtown Cleveland. So the next time you have a free weekend, just travel north to have an amazing art experience!
